LIFE OF DAVID – Part 37

FEAR OR FAITH?  SAUL OR DAVID?

A.  Fear or Faith?

            1.   Three types of fear in the Bible

                        a.   Alarm (neutral, normal human fear; fear for the right reasons),  2 Cor 11:3; Gal 4:11;  Psa 56:3.

                        b.  Sinful destructive fear, Num 14:1-12; Mat 14:30-31; Gal 2:12.

                        c.   Constructive fear,  Acts 19:17;  Ro 13:1-7; 2 Cor 7:1;  Eph 5:21; Col 3:22; Heb 4:1; 10:30-31; Philip 2:12.

            2.    Victory over fear is one of the greatest privileges we have as believers, 2 Tim 1:7; Philip 4:4-6; Gen 15:1; Rev 1:17; Ex 14:13-14; Dt 31:8; Isa 41:10; Heb 11:27; 13:6; Psa 56:3-4; Rom 8:31-32; Heb 2:14-15; Jer 23:4; Dt 20:1; Neh 4:14; Psa 112:7; Job 41:25; Psa 34:4; Jn 14:1-3; Heb 2:14-15;  1 Jn 4:18.

            3.   Common causes of sinful fear

                        a.   Rejection of Bible doctrine: lack of faith, Rom 14:23; Prov 1.

                        b.   Wrong priorities in life, Mt 6; 10:29-31.

                        c.   Carnality and reversionism, 1 Sam 17:11; 8:12.

                        d.   Orientation to man rather than to God, Gal 1:10; Jn 3:1.

                        e.   Life of carnality and reversionism reaped in old age, Ecc 12:1-8.

            4.    It is imperative for the believer to orient to the unfailing faithfulness of God and His grace—especially during times of stress, Lam 3:21-25; 1 Cor 1:9; 10:13; 1 Thess 5:24; 2 Thess 3:3; 2 Tim 2:13;  Heb 10:23; Js 1:19; 1 Jn 1:9; Rev 19:11.
