LIFE OF DAVID – Part 34
David and Goliath
1. There
is a need for every believer to go beyond the simple story of David and Goliath
and move into the dynamics of a profound doctrinal and spiritual understanding that
is so critical to our own spiritual lives.
a. The crucial lessons on fellowship, 1 Sam.
16:18; Psa. 16:8.
b. The crucial lessons on doctrinal
growth, Psa 19.
c. The crucial lessons on supergrace, Psa 23; Eph 3:20.
d. The crucial lessons on nature of divine
discipline and reversionism, cf. Saul.
e. The crucial lessons on the WOG,
negative volition, and mental disorders.
f.
The crucial lessons on the
providence of God.
g. The crucial lessons on typology.
2. Note
the attention to the historical detail, 1 Sam 17:1-7—this is not legend.
3. Consider how the Goliaths of the world shout
their taunts against the God of the Bible, His establishment principles, and
His people, 17:8-10; Jn 15:18.
4.
Consider how the majority of God’s own people are immature and reversionistic
and how they react to the taunts and challenges of the world: with fear,
intimidation, and dismay, 1 Sam. 17:11.
5.
Biblical principles on fear.
a)
Reversionistic man lives an upside-down life in regard to God, Reality,
Truth, values, and fear: he ends up fearing what he should not fear and not
fearing what he should fear, cf. Saul, Goliath, and the men of Israel, cf. Mat.
10:28; Luke 12:4-6; Heb. 4:1.
(b)
The only thing Jesus ever really rebuked His disciples for was for
moving into fear rather than biblical faith—i.e. for being irrational, Mark
4:36-40; Mk 9:32.
(c)
Biblical faith is always contingent upon the intellect, knowledge, the
will, rationality, reason, and logic—and the attacks on the intellect and attempts
to set knowledge against faith are all satanic, i.e. leap of faith garbage.
(d)
Faith 101, the basics. Biblical faith is first propositional (intellectual)
and then personal (volitional), Heb 11:6.
(e) Fear destroys the spiritual life and brings
a host of mental and psychological problems, Job 4:14-15; James 1:8.
(f)
God has a plan to deliver all believers from all earthly fears—and that
plan revolves around Him, Josh. 1:5-6; Psa 91; 1 Pt
5:7.
(g)
Failure to trust God in critical times of fear will prevent the believer
from advancing into the promised life, Num 13:27-14:9.
(h)
The solution to all fear always comes down to biblical faith, Mat 14:22‑33.
(i) God intends for us to parlay all of our fears
into biblical trust, Psa 56.
(j) Fear
that is not parlayed into trust leads to despondency and depression, 1
Kings 19:1‑18.
(k)
Recovery from fear, anxiety, and depression is only possible by
returning to the God of the Bible, Heb 13:6; Psa
56:4; Deut 20:3‑4; 31:6;
Psalm 27:14; 37:7; 91; 55:22; 56:3; Prov 2:8; 3:5‑6;
Isa 26:3; 30:15; 41:10; 40:29‑31; 2 Chron 20:15; Jn 16:33; 1 Cor 10:13.
(l) Faith in God’s providential care removes
fear of danger, Mat 10:31.
(m) Faith in God
’s provision of the HS removes fear of inability, 2 Tim 1:7.
(n) Faith in God’s PPOG removes
fear of the uncertain future, Heb 11:23-27.
(o) Faith in God’s unconditional
perfect love removes fear of condemnation, 1 John 4:18.
(p) Faith in God’s provisions
removes fear of suffering, Rev 2:10.
(q) Faith during times of unjust
suffering removes fear of injustices, 1 Pet 3:13-15.
(r) Faith in God’s providence removes fear from
sudden dangers, Prov 3:25-26.
(s) Faith in the presence of God
removes fear of death, Psalm 23:4; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Heb 2:14-15.
(t) Faith in the Word of God removes fear
related to advancing into the promised life especially in the face of intense
pressures and opposition, Joshua 1:5-9.
(u) Faith in the promises of God
not only removes fear but brings a plethora of spiritual dynamics and
blessings, Prov 3:5; 4:7-9; Psa
34:8, 19, 55:11, 22, 22; Dt
31:8;
1 Peter 5:7.
6. David’s
victory over Goliath, 1 Sam 17:11-58.
