COMMUNION SPECIAL

THE LAST PASSOVER AND THE FIRST LORDíS SUPPER

A.Our Lordís intense desire to share the Lordís Supper with believers, Lk 22:15.

B.††† Introduction to the Lordís Supper.

††††††††††† 1.Our Lord left the church with only two ordinances (not sacraments!).

††††††††††††††††††††††† a.First, there is the ordinance of baptism which emphasizes identification of the believer into the life of Jesus Christ and His body the church Ė and the break with the dominance of the OSN, cf. Rom 6:1-6.

††††††††††††††††††††††† b.†† Second, there is the ordinance of the Lordís Supper which celebrates the continuance in the life of Christ.

††††††††††† 2.†† These two ordinances are only for believers, and for that matter: only for believers who are in fellowship with God, and for that matter: only for believers who understand what these ordinances are all about.

††††††††††† 3.6 Terms include:Lord's supper (I Cor. 11:20); communion (I Cor. 10:16), cup of the Lord (I Cor. 10:21), table of the Lord (I Cor. 10:21), Eucharist, love (feasts) Jude 1:12.

C.†† The roots of the Lordís Supper go back to the ordinance of the Passover.

††††††††††† 1.†† Passover is a memorial to physical deliverance of Israel from Egypt by virtue of sacrifice.

††††††††††† 2.†† Lordís Supper is a memorial to spiritual deliverance to believers by means by virtue of the sacrifice of the LJC.

††††††††††† 3.Both the Passover and the Lordís Supper also look forward to the coming of the Messiah.††

††††††††††† 4.††† A look at the Passover in Exodus 12.

D.†† Our Lordís Transformation of the Last Passover into the First Lordís Supper, Mk 14:12-25.

††††††††††† 1.†† Preparation, Mark 14:12-16.

††††††††††† 2.†† The Last Passover, Mk 14:17-21.

††††††††††† 3.The institution of the first Lordís Supper, Mk 14:22-25.
