LIFE OF DAVID – Part 19

THE HOLY SPIRIT, HOLINESS, & THAT FANTASTIC UNIQUE

MINISTRY OF HOLY SPIRIT IN THE CHURCH AGE

A.  Ministry of the Holy Spirit – Old Testament and New Testament.

            1. The ministry of the HS in the Old Testament was very limited, whereas in the CA the ministry of the Holy Spirit is beyond imagination, 1 Sam 16:13-14 w/ Jn 7:37-39.

            2.  The CA was totally unknown in the OT, Eph 3:1-12; Col 1:25-27.

            3.  If not for the CA, human history would have been over 1,000 years ago.

B.  In the Church Age there are 7 ministries of the HS at the moment of salvation.

            1.   The illuminating/convicting ministry of the Holy Spirit, Jn 16:8-11.

            2.   Regeneration, Titus 3:5; Jn 36:3-5.

            3.   Baptism of the Holy Spirit, 1 Cor 12:13; Eph 4:5; Gal 3:26-27;

            4.   Indwelling, 1 Cor 3:16.

            5.   Filling of the HS, Eph 5:18.

            6.   Sealing, Eph 1:13-14.

            7.   Spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit, 1 Cor 12:11.

C.   Positional sanctification: results of baptism of HS as believer is placed in JC.

            1.    Prophecy of HS placing believers in Jesus Christ, Jn 14:20; Acts 1:5

            2.    Permanent positional sanctification,  Rom 6:3-5; 1 Cor 1:2; Heb 10:10, 14.

            3.    Believer becomes a new spiritual species, 2 Cor 5:17.

            4.    Believer shares life and blessings of Christ, as a believer

                        a.  You share His life which is eternal life, 1 Jn 5:11-12.

                        b.  You share Christ's righteousness, 2 Cor 5:21.

                        c.  You share the election of Christ, Eph 1:3-4.

                        d.  You share the destiny of Christ,  Eph 1:5-6.

                        e.  You share the sonship of Christ, Gal 3:26; Jn 1:12.

                        f.   You share heirship of Christ, Rom 8:16-17; 1 Pet 1:4. ity.

                        g.  You share priesthood of JC, 1 Pet 2:5,9.

                        h.  You share everything Christ is and has, for the head and the body are united into one spiritual entity.

D.   Experiential sanctification.

            1.   Biblical Hebrew and Greek concepts of sanctification.

            2.   Every aspect of God’s plan for your life revolves around P&E sanctification, 1 Pet 1:15-16; 1 Thess 4:3; 7; 5:23; Eph 1:4 5:25; 26; 2:10; Rom 12:1; 2 Cor 7:1.

            3.  Only the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit can give you victory over your three lifelong nemeses: KD, OSN, Satan, Rom 7:15-8:6; Eph 6:10-20.
            4.  The mechanics of sanctifying ministry of the HS is faith + BD, Gal 3:1-3.

            5.  The 4 categories of sins which destroy the sanctifying ministry of HS

                        a.  Blasphemy – rejection of JC – by the unbeliever, Mt 12:31.

                        b.  Lying to the Holy Spirit, - being a spiritual phony, Acts 5:1-5.

                        c.  Quenching the HS – Apathy, 1 Thess 5:19.

                        d.  Grieving the HS – Antagonism, Eph 4:30

            6.   Sanctification includes conflict with the OSN, Gal 5:16-17; Rom 7:15-8:5

                        a.   Your OSN is the center of your rebellion against God, sin in  Rom 7:13; flesh in Gal 5:16; old man in Eph 4:22.

                        b.  The OSN has 2 trends + 1 lust pattern, Jn 8:44; Gal 5:16-17.

                        c.  OSN is the source of temptation, but volition that is the source of sin.

                        d.  When your OSN controls your soul you are carnal, 1 Cor 3:1-5.

                        e.  When the HS controls the soul you are spiritual, Gal 5:22-23.

                        f.   Every time you chose to sin the OSN wins the conflict, Gal 5:17.

                        g.  No system of morality can produce spirituality, Isa 64:6.

                        h.  You can lose the filling of the HS, but not indwelling of HS.

                        i.   The only way to recover from carnality is confession of sin, 1 Jn 1:9 – remove sin: Js 1:21; 1 Pet 2:1-2; Rom 13:12-13; Heb 12:1; Js 4:8; 2 Cor 7:1; Eph 4:22.

            7.  Sanctification includes conflict with the world, 1 Jn 2:15-16; Js 4:4-6.

            8.  Sanctification includes conflict with the Devil, 1 Pet 5:8.

            9.  Spirituality, i.e. the FHS, is an absolute and is coterminous with fellowship with God, Jn 15:1-5; 1 Jn 1:5-9; Gal 5:22-23.

            10.  How sanctification, that “set apartness,” works out in the life,

                        a.   Set apart “to” God instead of KD, 1 Jn 2:15; Js 4:4-8.

                        b.   Set apart “in fellowship” with God, Gen 5:22.

                        c.   Set apart “before” God, Gen 17:1.

                        d.   Set apart “after” God, Gen 17:1; Dt 18:14..

                        e.   Set apart - “belonging” to God, 1 Cor 6:20; 7:23.

                        f.    Set apart in “service” for God, Gal 1:15-16.

                        g.   Set apart in “pleasing” God, Eph 6:5-7.

                        h.   Set apart in being “like” God, 1 Pt 1:16.

            11.  True holiness should never be confused with self-centered “holiness.”

            12.  True holiness should never be defined by “Christian activism.”

            13.   True holiness involves transformation by consecration to God, Rom 12:1-2.

            14.  The context of holiness is justification through Jesus Christ.

            15.  The root of holiness is cocrucifxion & coresurrection with JC., Rom 6:11-18.

            16.   The Agent of Holiness is the Holy Spirit.

            17.  The experience of holiness includes conflict, Rom 7:15ff

            18.  The standard of holiness is Bible doctrine, TRUTH, Eph 4:23-24.

            19.   The heart of holiness is PLG & SL to man, Mt 22:35-40; Gal 5:22; 1 Cor 13.
